Journeying with Joshua

Discovering God’s Faithfulness

Teaching Series: Autumn Term 2007

Scripture is full of God’s promises to his people and this term as we study parts of the book of Joshua together we will discover many of God’s promises being fulfilled. This a book full of action and adventure - the story of people overcoming overwhelming odds to emerge victorious as they trust God and allow themselves to be led by him. There’s something in here for each one of us. As one writer puts it:

‘Joshua is a book for those whose prayers seem to go unanswered, for those who wonder if God really is alive and active, and for those who desire fresh assurance of God’s dependability.’

The background:

In Joshua, we pick up on the period of Israel’s history immediately after the death of Moses and see it through the entry, conquest and division of the Promised Land. In these chapters God’s promise to Abraham is finally fulfilled after hundreds of years of waiting. "To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates" (Genesis 15:18)

God’s faithfulness is demonstrated to the extent that at the end of the book we read

"You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the Lord your God gave you has failed. Every promise has been fulfilled; not one has failed." Joshua 23:14

Dates and authorship:

Although there is some debate amongst scholars, the traditional viewpoint is that the events described in the book of Joshua took place around 1400 years before Christ in the late bronze age. The earliest Jewish traditions claim that Joshua wrote his own book, except for the final section about his funeral, whilst some point to a much later composition. Whilst these details are of interest, our main concern is with the story of God’s work amongst his people and the lessons we can draw for our own lives of faith today.
